Auckland Girls' Grammar School has an outstanding sporting reputation spread throughout a variety of individual and team sports. We aim to promote participation and provide the opportunity for all AGGS girls to gain a positive experience from sport. Through sport we encourage the development of discipline, commitment, positive attitudes, skill acquisition and taking responsibility as a contributing member of a team. All students are encouraged to participate in at least one sport throughout the school year.

The Sports Department consists of three staff members: Sports Director Christo Peters, Sports Co-ordinator Fiona Reid and Netball Co-ordinator Vienna James. Throughout the year we are supported by an invaluable group of students, parents, coaches and teachers who collectively make sport at AGGS what it is today.

Throughout the year there are many whole school events that the Sports Department are responsible for. The AGGS Athletics Day at Mt Smart Stadium is one such event which includes all Yr9 and Yr10 students and is open to all other years. Each year this is a wonderful day of track and field with 800+ competitors. The AGGS Swimming Sports and AGGS Cross Country are also events that come under the sports umbrella with the Cross Country again compulsory for Yr9 and Yr10 students. For details on this year's events please go to 'Whole School Events'. As all these events take place in Term 1 it's a busy start to the year for sports. Throughout the rest of the year the other events hosted by Sport include interclass competitions, Lip Sync which is a hugely popular evening of entertainment featuring dancing and miming acts from the students and Nationals Trips for various sporting codes throughout the country throughout the year.

The sports offered at AGGS are constantly evolving and include well established sports such as Netball, Rugby, Softball and Football as well as relatively specialist sports such as Diving, Equestrian and Petanque. Wherever possible if students are interested in a sport, we endeavour to bring that sport to the school. For a full detailed description of all sports at AGGS please see 'Summer Sports' or 'Winter Sports' depending on the specific time of year that sport is played.

AGGS reputation of producing elite athletes and High Performance teams is something we pride ourselves on. In recent years this includes our Premier Netball team placing 2nd at the New Zealand National Netball Tournament in 2010 and our Premier Basketball team placing 3rd at the New Zealand National Basketball Tournament in 2010. Individual sporting merits vary every year with many students representing at regional, national and international levels in each year group. We constantly focus on supporting these athletes in whatever capacity we can.

The sporting facilities within AGGS are constantly in use throughout the year, often there are so many teams training that surrounding facilities for specific sports are also needed to keep up with demand.

On-site facilities include:

  • Outdoor grass area/Western Park (Full Lacrosse pitch size used for Lacrosse, Rugby, Touch, Football, Cross Country, Softball, Athletics, Kilikiti)
  • Outdoor sand based Turf area (3 Netball courts size, used for Tennis, Hockey, Netball)

The Weeks Review

"Hi all,

Last week saw the first game of Tennis as well as the completion of the Table Tennis and Badminton Seasons. Our Tennis team had a solid 6-3 win over Massey with our top 3 singles players winning 6-0. Congratulations also needs to go to Zephyr Scayan in year 9 who played her first ever game of singles after only 2 practices and only lost 6-3 - A great effort for a student who has only been playing one week!

Table Tennis finished their season on Friday 30th September. This has been the first time in at least 4 years that we have fielded a team in table tennis and from all feedback it was a success and a sport that we will be offering next year. Thank you to Mr Kim for making it happen.

Badminton continues it's run of titles as our top term 3 team also won their game to add to the tally of 3 grade titles gained last term. The win was as close as it could have been with both teams tied at 3 games each but AGGS winning in a count back of points 111 to 110! Well done to the team and well done to the members of our Thursday teams who also performed well throughout their season.

AGGS Swimming Day at AGGS Swimming & Diving Pools
Written by: Lillian Hanly

The predictions for the day were 'cloudy with a chance of showers' however the decision was made by the Sports Department with the support of the willing and determined Sports Committee that the show must go on. So there they stood, dressed in their pirate/life saving costumes ready for the task in hand. Timid 3rd formers and confident seniors lined up crookedly in the wrong lines as shouts were heard repeatedly all over the place 'seniors here - juniors over there' on the front lawn. Finally, with stamps on their hands and wet bums from the bleechers, "AWAY ME HEARTIES" was blasted over the sound system – and with that we were off. After what I'm sure was guidelines about rules and safety (who really listens to these bits) the race was on – against time and against each other.
