Waka Ama Nationals 2011

Throughout the early mornings of term one, a mixed group of girls attended training on and off throughout January and February bracing the dawn winds and enjoying the beautiful sun rises down at Ohaku Bay as they trained on the water with the aim of representing AGGS at the National Secondary Schools Waka Ama Sprints. As the competition date drew closer and the pressure began to rise, the team went through some major changes including sudden drop outs and desperate call ups. In the end, a small compact and committed group of paddlers travelled down to Rotorua together to compete in the 2011 event. Taking place on the stunning Rotoiti (Blue Lake) the scene was set on the 29th March for a great week.

The competition began on Tuesday with the singles races and AGGS were in the fortunate position (thanks to some very generous parents allowing others to use their personal Waka – Mr and Mrs Leilua). Tawera Taylor and Kendra Leilua paddled strongly in the U16's race with both qualifying for the finals – in itself and wonderful achievement. Rawinia Maihi represented the school for the first time in the strong field of U19, although she gained a lot in confidence from this experience she did not place in the finals.

The main events took place over three intensive days from Wednesday through to Friday. Teams from all over New Zealand gathered in Rotorua with the aim of showing off their skills all hoping to take away a placing in the finals. To emphasis how big this event is becoming, for the first time ever there was even a team from Tumutoa all the way from Tahiti. AGGS had both teams represented in the 250m straight and 500m straight with turn races.

Each team consisted of two teams each with six paddlers. Coached by Raz and Phillis Meti and managed by Maria Marama the girls were well supported and worked to pull their very best on the water. All in all, this year was busy and eventful Nationals trip with a huge effort given by all. With factors such as collisions, weather conditions, fitness, pressure, experience and general distractions there were many lessons learned. Of the two teams, Team A qualified for the 500m turn race finals placing 4th in the race by milliseconds. Team B did not manage to achieve the finals but by all accounts, each girl left the regatta knowing the standard that they need to beat next year. Just as many AGGS teams have in the past, we did win, in our hearts.

Congratulations to the following girls and we hope to see many more back next year.
